Disappointments of 2008 - Part I

Here's a look at some of the stuff that didn't quite cut it for us in 2008.

As 2008 comes to an end, it’s time to reflect upon the gaming year gone by. A ridiculous amount of games released throughout this year making it one of the most hectic ones for both Nik and me in recent years. For every awesome game out there, there was something mediocre or thoroughly disappointing that we were forced to play through. Today we’ll take a look at some of those disappointments. Need for Speed Undercover The one game that was poised to redeem the Need for Speed series turned out to be the one game that could very well destroy this franchise; pretty ironic, huh? Terrible voice acting, shoddy gameplay, cringe worthy visuals and an appalling plot are some of things that made this game almost unbearable to play. Sure it did have certain awesome cop chases reminiscent of Most Wanted, but they were few and far between; and even they could not redeem this abomination. We’re still trying to figure out how it passed EA’s quality assurance test in the first place. Mortal Kombat VS DC By joining forces with the DC universe Midway have diluted Mortal Kombat VS DC to such an extent it’s actually annoying to watch. After I’m done hammering away on my opponent I want to finish him off in a terribly brutal way and not pummel him into the f****g ground like some eighties cartoon character. Sure the gameplay is pretty tight (Gagan certainly seemed to think so) but it still sickens me to see Midway literally pee all over their fans to ensure this game’s Teen rating. The terrible voice acting and a plot that’s as lame as the violence don’t help either. Grand Theft Auto IV (PC) No matter what people say about GTA IV, I enjoyed it. Even though I’ve played both the Xbox360 and PS3 versions I was still looking forward to the PC port since Rockstar’s ports never disappoint… or so I thought. For starters, a lot of PC gamers will not be able to play this game thanks to its hideously steep system requirements. Even if you get the game to work, it doesn’t look as good as some of the other PC titles on the block. It suffers from tons of technical issues like texture tearing, clipping problems and terrible frame rates. The first patch released by Rockstar screwed the game up even further for some people. And yeah, what’s the deal with shoving Games for Windows Live and Rockstar’s Social Club down our throat just to play the game? |
