Upcoming RTS Games of 2010

Here's what RTS lovers can look forward to this year.

Quality over quantity seems to be the motto for 2010's RTS titles. 2009 saw some awesome breakthroughs in the genre like the supremely accessible Halo Wars on the Xbox 360 and the more combat-focussed Dawn of War 2 but releases were few and far between. This year seems more of the same with just a handful of real-time strategy games to look forward to. Starcraft 2: Wings of Liberty (PC) No RTS list is complete without Starcraft 2. With Blizzard employing almost all of the same gameplay mechanics that made the first game such a classic, improved graphics that would finally be in 3D and Havok physics it's bound to keep a lot of old timers happy, be accessible to a lot of newbies and prevent South Korea from waging war on Blizzard. Wings of Liberty is the first of the three campaigns focusing on the Terran side of the conflict with the Protoss and Zerg campaigns shipping seperately. While there's no fixed date for its release expect it in the first half of 2010. Command and Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight (PC) Tiberian Twilight promises to be the last installment in this seminal franchise concluding the GI-NOD war and being the final game to feature charismatic villain, Kane. If this wasn't enough, the folks at EA LA have decided to discard the classic Command and Conquer Formula for an approach that has more in common with the cult DOTA (Defense of the Ancients) mod for WarCraft 3 and Dawn of War 2. How this works for the series remains to be seen as it could potentially split their fanbase right down the middle. Tiberian Twilight should be in stores this March. RUSE (PC,X360,PS3) As the title suggests, a key element of this World War 2 RTS is the ability to "ruse" or bluff your opponent. Be it faking information, creating decoy buildings or hiding all of your units in an area RUSE appears to be one of the more innovative titles this year. Even though it's World War 2 based, the fine folk at Eugen Systems have employed a sweet, clean art direction with very little grit and grime that's synonymous with World War 2 games. And for those of you without a PC, you can get your strategy fix too as this hits consoles as well sometime this year. While there are just three new games to look forward to, there are some honorable mentions in terms of expansion packs from last year's RTS gems. These include Supreme Commander 2, Dawn of War 2 : Chaos Rising and Sins of the Solar Empire: Diplomacy both of which should be out right about now. |
