Upcoming Shooters of 2010

Here's what FPS buffs can look forward to in 2010.

2010 may be the best year for gaming but sadly it's pretty dismal for the first person genre. While we do have quite a few AAA shooters lined up, they are really few in number. But then again quality is better than quantity right? Metro 2033 (Xbox360 PC) Metro 2033 is kind of like the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games, only with a lot more spit and shine and player friendly mechanics. While S.T.A.L.K.E.R. focused more on atmosphere and tough gameplay (that really tested your patience at times), Metro 2033 seems content with its Jerry Bruckheimer-esqe approach to the whole post apocalyptic scenario. Medal of Honor (Xbox360 PS3 PC) The Medal of Honor series is going the Modern Warfare way with a huge reboot to the franchise. For starters it’s moving away from World War II to the grittier and more urban war on terrorism in Afghanistan. While gameplay details are still a bit scarce we know that two separate teams are working on the single and multi player portions respectively. The SP campaign is being handled by the guys at EA while MP veterans DICE are handling the online component. Looks like the competition’s really heating up for MW2. Halo Reach (Xbox360) Halo Reach is probably going to be the biggest selling shooter of 2010 not only because it’s a Halo game but because developer Bungie have improved gameplay and visuals significantly giving the franchise a much needed adrenaline jolt. Sadly Master Chief will be missing from this game but on a brighter note you get to play as a Spartan as opposed to Halo 3: ODST where you had to settle for a human soldier. Singularity (Xbox360 PS3 PC) Developer Raven has been having a bit of a cold spell off late that got really chilly with Wolfenstein, a commercial failure. They’re hoping to redeem themselves with Singularity another first person shooter that plays around with the fabric of space and time. While Singularity doesn’t look like it’ll win any GOTY awards its gameplay look pretty enjoyable. But then again, that’s what we said about Wolf too right? Untitled Call of Duty game (Xbox360 PS3 PC) Infinity Ward’s fate may be uncertain after the events that transpired at Activision but that doesn’t mean the Cod franchise isn’t going to be milked like a Swiss cow. There’s no official word regarding this but word on the street is that developer Treyarch, the same guys behind CoD III and CoD: World at War are busy working on a Call of Duty game that now takes place in Vietnam. Expect an official announcement real soon as the game’s slated for a November 2010 release. Brink (Xbox360 PS3 PC) From the same people that brought you the multiplayer-only Quake Wars, comes yet another MP focused game (this one has a single player campaign as well) that takes place in the near future allowing players to align themselves to one of two sides - Resistance and Security – before Civil War breaks out. As with most MP games on the block today expect persistent unlocks, upgradable weapons, customizable uniforms and so on. |
