Nikhil Singh’s Top Picks

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
This is sitcom about a group of friends who run a pretty washed out Irish bar called 'Paddy's Pub' in Philadelphia. The show follows the four of them - Dennis, Sweet Dee, Charlie and Mac - as they tackle every little issue in their lives in the most illogical and retarded way possible. The show started off with an ultra low budget (the show's pilot cost them less than $200), but it’s incredibly well drawn and enacted dysfunctional characters really appealed to the public as well as the network channels, who funded the project that grew to become a major success. The best part about the show is the character 'Charlie', who's a really daft guy with a load of complexes in life, that manages to muck up even the most basic tasks in the most hilarious manner. If you like sitcoms, you owe it to yourself to watch this one!

The Mentalist
The Mentalist follows the life of Patrick Jane, a CBI (California Bureau of Investigation) consultant whose ability to observe and analyze the minutest detail in human behavior allow him to solve some of the most impossible cases with incredible ease. I don't really like police dramas normally, but what got me hooked on to the Mentalist was the intricately woven plots and the way Jane unweaves each of them using his deductive skills alone, making him a modern day Sherlock Holmes. What adds a bit of humor to the show is the way he manipulates those around him, including the team of CBI agents he works with (head by the no-nonsense Senior Agent Teresa Lisbon) in to getting his way out of even the stickiest situations.

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
How can a TV show starring Will Smith not be at the zenith of awesomeness?! The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air was undoubtedly one of the most hilarious sitcoms to have blessed television. It followed the life of Will, an over-smart teenager who gets sent to his wealthy relatives' home for an attitude adjustment, but instead spreads his cocky ways on to his prim-and-proper cousins, who he often has clashes with. One of the most memorable characters was Carlton Banks, Will's refined cousin who he shares both insults and brotherliness. Then there's his eldest cousin - the attractive Hillary Banks - who's not the brightest of the lot, and a real spoiled brat at that; her clashes with Will contributes abundantly to the show's appeal. The most memorable part of the show though, is its incredibly catchy theme songs, which sticks onto you like a bad habit.
