For those with a tight grip on their wallets whose primary requirements from their mobile phone are music and radio, these options will help.

Samsung Guru 1410 – Rs. 2,930 Samsung’s Guru Series of low-end handsets has been faring quite well in the Indian market primarily because of their simple designs and relevant features that the company has managed to squeeze into them. The 1410 is a relatively new handset from Samsung. This is probably the best value for money as the company has fitted it with Wi-Fi at this price. I found it hard to believe but Samsung confirmed the same as well. Other than that it also has external memory support for storing music for playback through the audio player or other data (up to 2GB). The FM radio has a built-in recording feature and Bluetooth is also available for file transfer. GPRS is present for net connectivity, but Wi-Fi for this price is still the biggest selling point. Click here for the specs table on the Samsung Website. Spice S-590 – Rs. 2,499 Spice’s S-590 candybar handset is another contender for a well featured handset in the lower end category. Like all the other handsets in this list the S-590 doesn’t disappoint when it comes to media. It features a media player for music and an FM radio as well. A microSD card up to a maximum of 2GB in capacity can be used for memory expansion. The S-590 also comes with a CIF camera that supports video recording. The FM radio also has a recording feature. Spice has also thrown in a Nimbuzz, the universal chat application for IM via GPRS a Call Blacklist feature as well as an SMS Scheduling feature. As a bonus addition to the handset, Spice has also included a link to MGurujee which will assist students appearing for exams like CAT, MAT, IITJEE, CBSE, etc. with online assistance for studying on the go. Intex IN2266 – Rs. 2,266 The IN2266 is a stylish candy bar handset from Intex Technology. It has support for microSD cards but only up to 2GB capacity, but that’s quite adequate to tote around quite a lot of music for the audio player. An FM radio is also evident as part of the features set. The handset also has support for GPRS and WAP for connecting to the internet. So this too is a simple enough handset that will still be good enough to provide users with enough media and connectivity to get the basics out of the way. If you have any other options you’d like to put forward please feel free to leave your comments below or email me your choices. The pre-requisites should be external memory support via any kind of memory card, a music player that supports mp3 playback and an FM radio. Basic WAP connectivity could also be something that most users these days would look for so you might consider that as well. The most important feature is of course the price, which should not exceed Rs. 4000. So send in your choices. |
