TGS 09: Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles

Hands-on with the latest Resident Evil shooter on Wii.

The Nintendo Wii has turned out to be a great platform for shooting games, thanks to the accurate light gun-style gameplay that the Wiimote can emulate. At this year's Tokyo Game Show, we got our hands on the upcoming Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles, a shooter based on the Resident Evil universe. This surely isn't the first shooter or in the RE series, but from the level we played, we can safely suggest that it's the best looking one. The game starts with Leon and Krauser on their first mission together. I tried the game out in co-op mode, with a very helpful Capcom representative, and honestly speaking, I don't think I can really enjoy the game in the single player as much. So the two heroes start off in a setting in South Africa, which seems quite similar in design to Resident Evil 5. We faced off a bunch of zombies who obviously don't get the concept of personal space, so it seemed more than justified to blow their heads off. I meant the blowing off heads part literally, as headshots were aplenty, thanks to the game's great controls. No limb dismemberment though, which seemed like quite a bummer. The demo also introduced us to various enemy types including piranhas, gigantic spiders, and of course a boss fight against a gigantic amphibian creature, who sure could take a lot of bullets. The build we tried out looked near-final, so if the final product looked anything like this, I'd say we'd have a great shooter on the Wii. But will it even end up on the Indian shores (more importantly, our office)? Well, we can only hope. |
