Why BlackBerry scores over Apple in India
There is no denying the fact that BlackBerry scores over Apple, big time in India.
Now, the reason for that is what I have looked to identify and put forth in this video.
Essentially, the wide range of handsets, including some reasonably low cost ones, plus BlackBerry's proprietary BlackBerry Messenger or BBM have proven to be the biggest draws for BlackBerry users in India.
Apple on the other hand essentially has just the iPhone in separate iterations which it has launched over the years. And the iPhone continues to remain prohibitively costly in India, with the latest iPhone 4S being offered by networks like Airtel and Vodafone at around the INR 50,000 mark, which is just over a $1,000.
That in my honest opinion is completely insane and totally ridiculous!
Also, the very fact that one cannot buy handsets on contracts from network operators in India, the way they are offered across much of the Western world, is also a big dampener for people to buy relatively costlier smart phones in India.
In spite of that, when we see that the overall size of the Indian mobile market in terms of end users or subscribers is well over 850 million - 893.4 million as of December 2011, which is in fact closer to 900 million, one can easily gauge the kind of potential that India has to offer, especially to smart phone vendors.
At the end of the day, it is really sad to hear stories or rumors about the death knell of Blackberry; hope that never really happens!
