From the ground to the gold - Lasse Virén takes Olympic Gold - Athletics - 10000m
Arriving at the Munich 1972 Olympic Games, Lasse Virén wasn't a favourite. At the European championships the year before, he had placed 17th in the 10,000m race.
During the twelfth lap, Lasse Virén and Emiel Puttemans had and accident and feel. Back on their feet, they both caught up to the leading pack and with a 600m to go, as Virén began his escape from the pack with Putteman following behind. Despite the fall, they both took the first two places of the race, with Lasse Viren taking gold and beating Ron Clarke's world record from 1965.
Lasse Virén also won the 5000m gold medal at the Munich 1972 Olympic Games, which took him to his first Olympic double-double.
