To ensure that your computer is as secure and stable as it can be, you should always install the latest updates. This video looks at how Windows Update can be configured on your Windows 7 computer to install updates. Important Updates These updates are recommended by Microsoft as a bare minium to ensure your computer has the latest security updates. Recommended updates These updates are not critical for the operating system to run but are recommended by Microsoft. These updates generally include feature updates and minor bug fixes. Optional updates Optional updates are updates that are not essential to run Windows 7. These updates generally include drivers and language files. Product updates These include any updates for Microsoft products, e.g., MS Office Configuring Windows Updates To configure Windows updates, open Windows update in the control panel under system and security. You can configure Windows updates to install updates automatically or download updates and give the user a choice later on. In the settings you can also configure what time you want the updates to be installed. If you want to ensure that a particular update is never installed, select the update and select hide update. This will remove the update from the view of updates waiting to be installed and ensure that the update is not installed even when updates are configured to install automatically.
